Steve Carell admits he’s low-key freaked out by AI, especially when it comes to art. He loves the “warts and imperfections” of human creativity and worries that perfect, machine-made work just isn’t real. That fear bleeds into his new HBO film Mountainhead, created by Succession’s Jesse Armstrong, which imagines a world run by tech moguls and AI—complete with a massive deepfake scandal that sparks violence across Asia.
Though some folks are calling it Succession-ish, Carell insists Mountainhead is darker and crazier, closer in vibe to Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove. It’s a chilling look at a future we might actually face, but Armstrong still sneaks in “palette-cleansing” moments of sharp, biting humor.
