Beyond Military, Meta is Eyeing an XR Expansion into the Medical Field

Meta’s Reality Labs is quietly gearing up to take its AR/VR tech from gaming (and military work with Anduril) into hospitals. New job posts for “Medical Devices Regulatory Specialists” show they’re chasing FDA and global approvals for wearables, AR glasses and SaMD (software as a medical device). Think surgeon-friendly, see-through Orion-style headsets, wrist-mounted controls for hands-free input, and AI chat assistants helping clinicians.

Of course, medical regs aren’t like shipping a new Quest model overnight—extensive validation, SOPs and red-tape mean it could be years before Meta’s medical XR hits the market. But if they pull it off, AR could let doctors keep eye contact with patients while overlaying vital data in real time.
