Hands-on with Lumus Waveguides TL;DR

Lumus, a 20-year-old AR optics vet known for crafting military-grade head-up displays, has nailed reflective waveguides that pack super-bright (3,000–7,000 nits) and spot-on color fidelity into totally transparent lenses. Their trick? Tiny projectors + partially reflective mirrors etched into glass, which keeps battery drain low (up to 10× better than rivals) and even lets you embed prescription optics.

At AWE they teased a 70° FOV prototype (CES debut, anyone?), plus current 50° and power-sipping 30° modules perfect for notification-style smartglasses. In a quick hands-on, the lightweight frames delivered a surprisingly square-shaped view that felt roomier than 30°, colors popped under bright indoor lights, and text stayed crisp—aside from occasional gray bars when blinking. Verdict: very promising tech you’ll likely see in real AR specs soon.
