Samsung steps up AR race with advanced microdisplay for smart glasses

TL;DR: Samsung’s semiconductor arm is sprinting toward commercializing its tiny LED-on-Silicon (LEDoS) micro-LED displays by 2027, aiming to power its own AR glasses and sell to heavyweights like Apple and Meta. After reshuffling late last year, it set up a dedicated micro-LED squad in its CSS unit and is backing LEDoS for its super-bright, power-sipping edge—perfect for glasses that need to work outdoors without draining the battery.

Why it matters: The LEDoS market could skyrocket from $30 million in 2023 to over $6.2 billion by 2032. Samsung’s MX mobile team plans a “no‐display” smart-glasses teaser in 2026, followed by a full-blown AR headset in 2027. With Google already in the mix and Meta’s “Orion” prototype using LEDoS tech, Samsung’s positioning itself as both a hardware contender and a go-to supplier in the next big XR boom.
