Microsoft just slapped a 50% price hike on Game Pass and, unsurprisingly, gamers are furious—even though Xbox’s gaming division is raking in record revenue. On one hand you’ve got declining console sales, shuttered studios and a big promise of new hardware; on the other, a pivot toward Windows-centric services and mobile that feels like Microsoft is quietly phasing out the traditional Xbox box.
Despite the “enshittification” grumbles and self-inflicted blunders, Xbox is rolling in cash. The real question now is whether Microsoft will double down on delivering awesome games or keep chasing quarterly growth at the expense of its core fans—and if Xbox can rise like a phoenix from this confusion, Forza and all.
