This is a submission for the Future Writing Challenge: How Technology Is Changing Things.
My precious girl,
Right now, you're playing on the floor, your curls have fallen onto your forehead, and it tickles - you laugh. Your little puppy is by your side, and in this moment, the world feels so simple and serene.
As I watch you, I think about the world that awaits you - the world that we, your generation, are shaping right now. I already know what I want to tell you. This message came to me as a single thought and lingered only for a moment before I opened my laptop and started typing.
You will open this letter when you turn 25. I wrote it in 2025, while I still have time to make the world a better place.
You know, 2025 isn’t bad at all. For the most part, we are serious, but sometimes a childlike spirit unexpectedly awakens within us. Do you remember how we all turn images in the style of Ghibli? This ability to retain a childlike perception of the world is our own kind of magic.
We are a generation of optimisers. Our startups skyrocket into the charts and burn out just as fast. But we never give up. Giving up is simply not in our nature. As the favourite refrain on social media goes: success comes to those who don’t quit. You roll your little rhombus until it becomes a sphere. But not unbearably hard - just enough to be worth the effort. After all, an exciting game should never be too simple.
The technologies we create are not just innovations; they are our way of caring for the future. Look at the wonders happening all around us! In medicine, microscopic robots are learning to deliver drugs directly to diseased cells, reaching the most intricate corners of the human body.
We have developed a patch made of 200 million stem cells to restore heart tissue. Moreover, scientists have created a gene therapy technique that can effectively combat heart failure. Artificial virions can now encapsulate genes and deliver them directly into cells - this is a true revolution in medicine!
We have learned to teleport quantum states between computers, opening up incredible possibilities for communication. Microsoft has created the Majorana 1 quantum chip with a million qubits, using topological materials. And to combat environmental pollution, we have developed unique peptides that can detect, capture, and break down microplastics.
Smart technologies are becoming a part of our bodies and minds. There are now glasses that translate speech into 40 languages and wearable gadgets that help plan our days and answer our questions. We have created a diamond battery based on carbon-14, capable of lasting an incredibly long time, and even a mini-organ that can generate blood.
We have developed light-sensitive chemicals - cyanine-carborane salts - that improve the treatment of aggressive cancers.
We are designing smart fabrics that can heat up from sunlight in just minutes, supersonic aircraft that travel three times the speed of sound. Electric cars are no longer just transportation - they are becoming an integral part of the energy system, helping to stabilise power grids. We have even created soft robots with hydraulic drives that can adapt to the most challenging environments.
Each innovation is a piece of care for our planet and for your future. We are pioneers who believe that technology can be not only smart but also soulful.
We are a generation that has realised: everything has already been invented, and now our task is to make it work better, faster, more efficiently. This is true creativity. We are not just consumers - we are creators.
With awe and anticipation, I look at you - a little girl playing on the floor - and imagine what a remarkable person you will become. The world we are building is your world. A safe world, full of opportunities, and wonder.
You are safe, my girl. We have built this space for you with great love.
With tenderness,
Your Mum
