Accountability Used to Be Simple
In the rule-based era:
- A script closed tickets
- A CRON reconciled wallets
- A workflow restarted itself
If something broke, responsibility was traceable.
Policies lived inside code.
Logic was deterministic.
Engineers embedded business rules explicitly.
Human intent governed the system.
But Learning Systems Change the Equation
Today, similar automations operate through learned behavior:
- A bot approves leave requests
- A classifier assigns access privileges
- A conversational agent fronts customer interactions
The issue is not capability.
It’s governance. ⚖️
When systems learn from outcomes, behavior can drift outside intended boundaries.

This is exactly the gap we ran into while building agentic systems.
We realized accountability can’t start after an AI acts.

Injection, drift, and ambiguity still exist — but nothing executes without deterministic gates and audit-grade traces.
