Something’s Growing in Our Pool-Cooled PCs

Ever thought your pool could double as a giant PC radiator? We did—until our swimming-pool water loop started smelling funky and, apparently, hosting its own little ecosystem. After finally nailing the corrosion issues, we tore down the LAN Center rigs, hunting down algae, gunk, and whatever else was thriving in the coolers.

Armed with shock treatments (aka the “Death Ray” ultraviolet cleaner), fresh biocide, and a whole lot of elbow grease, we set out to sterilize every last drop of loop water.
